Editorial Excerpt from The Gliterrati (Carat Club Magazine)

The most intense emotion is in the most fleeting of moments – when a mom sheds a tear as she bids her newly-wedded child a farewell, the page boy stealing a kiss from the flower girl or when the bride and groom longingly gazes at each other from across the ballroom. In these precise moments, Peter Tan will be quietly clicking away, capturing emotions to be woven into an enchanting love story to be told over and over again.

Known for his expert touch of artfully piecing together photographs, his masterpieces convey the feelings and emotions of each couple; be it a happy and lighthearted twirl or a tender and intimate kiss. “Magic often happens when a moment arrives, and we’re able to capture it on film, their expressions, their emotions, within a split second”. It is this candid, natural and honest style of photography that Peter is known for, taken with his view of the world through a hopeless romantic’s eye.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Peter Tan describes himself as the ‘typical street smart city boy with a wicked sense of humor’. After working in the IT business for more than 10 years and then as a management consultant, Peter gave up a comfortable lifestyle years ago to satiate his passion for photography. He started with a film SLR and burnt through roll after roll of color and black and white film shooting architectures, religious events and photo journalistic photography in Hong Kong and Macau, where he was based at the time.

Like any passionate relationships, perhaps the one he has with photography happened by chance when one of his friends asked him to photograph a wedding. Or perhaps it was fate, as Peter then found the perfect canvas for freedom of expression and artistic license. Together with his years of experience in IT, the new wave of digital SLR photography became like a second nature to him; retouching and digital imaging tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom were commonplace. He has even developed a strong digital workflow to enable efficient postproduction of images for fine art printing.

Since then, he has shot weddings both locally and internationally, with Bali and Melbourne being amongst his favorite locations. Having gone as far as Slovakia to shoot a wedding, it is opportunities like this that has afforded him varied experiences of exotic locations to capture on film eternally memorable moments.

Peter was awarded and certified as a Master Photographer by the prestigious Master Photographers Association (UK) in 2009. He was also inducted into the Canon Malaysia’s inaugural EOS Hall of Fame in 2009 as well.  He served as the Honorary Advisor after having been elected as the inaugural President (2010-2011) in the professional body WPPM (Wedding & Portrait Photographers Malaysia). He and his team successfully organized the first WPPM conference in 2010. He now runs a photographer’s networking event, Behind The Lens, a monthly talk show and interview series for the benefit of emerging and new photographers, sponsored by various camera and accessories companies. In 2011, he won first place in the Open Category in Far East MPA Conference, attended by various photographers from around the region.

Peter has been appointed thrice (3) in-a-row as a judge in Canon’s Annual Photomarathon (2009-2010-2011) in Malaysia and also several other photo competitions. He was the featured photographer personality on Gliterrati by the Carat Club, Malaysia’s premier diamond jeweler, featured in Gorgeous magazine and in China Press, a local Chinese daily. Peter has shot a 7 page spread for international superstar Patrizio Buanne and his image was used as the cover of FACES magazine April 2010 issue. His work has been published in Cosmopolitan Bride Malaysia, June 2010 issue. He was also recently the only official photographer for Bruno Mars 2011 concert and Jason Mraz 2012 concert, both in Malaysia, appointed by WARNER Music Malaysia.

Described by those who know him as playful and funny, Peter loves capturing images with vibrant colors, graceful compositions and his intimate yet expressive style has won many hearts. This self-taught portrait and wedding photographer describes his style as capturing real emotions, poised glamour and intimate passion all woven into an everlasting story.

In between weddings and contemporary family portraits, he also shoots feature stories and portraits for magazines. Among his subjects includes several members of royalty, ambassadors of several countries, corporate figures and international celebrities such Patrizio Buanne, local celebrities like Vince Chong, Daniel Veerapan, Pearly Chong, Susan Lankaster, Anrie Too, Lina Teoh, Will Quah, Nadhira Nishaa, and Tengku Azura, corporate figures such as Lee Sze Suen of SUEN Jewellers (formerly known as The Carat Club). He also conducts private workshops and seminars for photography enthusiasts.

Evelyn Lam never knew that she’d end up a wedding & portrait photographer although she has always loved taking pictures since she was a teenager. She studied business at the university and worked in diverse industries. She had not derived as much satisfaction from any of her past work until she found photography.

Together with her partner, Peter Tan, & a team of 6 assistant photographers, they make up the Peter Tan Photography. Together, they have shot quite a number of weddings, including Malaysia’s very own Prince of Drift’s wedding, last December.

In April 2010, Evelyn was certified a Master Photographer by the Master Photographers Association (MPA), UK and found out later, that she is the first female photographer to be accredited with that qualification in Malaysia. Evelyn was recently nominated as one of the Top 10 Female Wedding Photographers by FACES Magazine. She was featured in the Gorgeous magazine and in the leading English daily, The Star newspaper and was one of 10 women photographers chosen by CANON Marketing Malaysia, to have their works displayed at the Femme City exhibition at the KLCC Convention Center.  She also photographed Jason Derulo during his concert in Kuala Lumpur. Most recently, she was only 1 of 4 women photographers chosen to shoot the theatrical performance of WOMEN:100, a 100 year celebration of women’s independence. She has shot several other theater performances namely, The Good Body by Susan Lankaster, Taming of The Shrew and Gods of Carnage.

Evelyn loves capturing the intimacy and passion of the couple purely because she wants her clients to remember that same exact emotional connection, for many years to come.
